The competition formed as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992 following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from The Football League, which was originally founded in 1888, and take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal.This deal will be worth £3 billion as of 2013–14, with BSkyB and BT Group securing the rights to broadcast 116 and 38 games respectively. The Premier League is the most-watched football league in the world, broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes. In the 2010–11 season the average Premier League match attendance was 35,363, the second highest of any professional football league other than the German Bundesliga, and stadium occupancy was 92.2% capacity. The Premier League ranked second in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) coefficients of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the last five years.

The Russian league, currently called SOGAZ Russian Football Championship due to sponsorship reasons, is the top division of Russian football. The competition is currently run by the Russian football Premier-League. There are 16 teams in the competition. The league has two Champions League qualifying places given to teams who finish in the top two at the end of the season and three Europa League places to teams who finish third, fourth and fifth. Relegation to the National League Championship are given to teams who finish bottom and second-bottom at the end of the season. The Russian Premier League was established in 2001 and succeeded the Top Division, the difference being that the Top Division was run by the Professional Football League of Russia, and the creation of the Premier League gave the clubs a greater degree of independence.

The winners of the league are promoted to the Super League, and bottom team is relegated to the 1. Liga Promotion. The second placed team enters a two-legged playoff against the 9th placed team in the Super League, the winner playing in the higher division next season.
The league was named Nationalliga B until 2003 when it was changed to the “Challenge League.”
Liechtenstein’s FC Vaduz also play in the Challenge League as Liechtenstein does not have a league of its own.
